Bio | On June 4, 2010, the world lost a devoted husband, a supportive father and an ethical industry leader when Douglas Hield Brown, 46, passed away. Doug was born on December 24, 1963, in Independence, Missouri, a joyous Christmas present for Lois Evelyn and the late Marion Lee Brown. He was the youngest child after David and Laura. In his youth, Doug enjoyed collecting rocks, singing in the school choir, and camping. He graduated in 1982, from Van Horn High School, in Independence and was an Eagle Scout. Doug earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering and a Masters of Science degree in Mineral Economics, both from the Colorado School of Mines. In 1984 Doug met his beloved wife, Mary Kathryn Richardson and they were married May 23, 1987. His favorite pastime was being with her, reading, taking walks, or sitting in the back yard, drinking iced tea and playing Scrabble. In 1996, Doug chose a home in Bellingham, Washington to raise his family. He took great pleasure in parenting his three sons Maxfield, Angus, and Santiago and he guided his boys with a balance of discipline, kindness and humor. With them, Doug learned to snowboard and master the art of text messaging. Doug was well respected in the natural resource industry. For more than twenty years, he held a variety of positions in the United States, Canada, Chile, South Africa and Russia. At Placer Dome Group and then Nova Gold Resources, Doug was honored to collaborate with his mentors and he worked persistently to meet many exciting challenges alongside his friends and colleagues. In August 2008, Doug joined Alta Gas as the Divisional Vice President of Renewable Energy-Hydro and was responsible for developing the run-of-river hydroelectric power portfolio in Western Canada. He was very proud of the relationships he had built and the projects he and his group had completed with the Tahltan Nation and with the provincial government of British Columbia. If it is true that a life is blessed depending upon the hopes it fulfills, Doug's life was genuinely blessed. His dreams of experiencing love, fatherhood, friendship and a career all came to fruition. A celebration of Doug's life will be held Sunday, June 27, 2 p.m. at the Roeder Home, 2600 Sunset Drive, Bellingham, Washington. Condolences can be left at www.JernsFuneralChapel.net
