Bio | Derrek J Woods, 57, died Friday the 18th of March in the city and home where he was born and raised. Contrary to his often fiery personality, his passing away in Independence seemed as relaxed and comfortable as one can hope. He was playing Bob Dylan and reclining in the front seat of his car. Derrek is remembered as a generous, loving, and intellectually stimulating son, older brother, and father by his mother, Lou Woods, his sons, Jessy and Michael Woods, his five sisters, Tracy Woods, Melody Woods, Carlea McAvoy, Sandee Woods, and Cheri Woods, and the large extended family who survive Derrek. Derrek was not known for nosiness, but his sought-after and keen advice were cherished by and integral to those his life connected. His closest friends comprise a deep web of lifelong relationships, one strong as the branches on any family tree. As an Eagle Scout, impassioned and informed debater, prolific poet and song-writer, sports fan, golfer, outdoorsman, and companion, among many other countless roles, he will be missed. A celebration of life will be held in July.
