Age 64, passed away January 8, 2021, of cancer. She was born May 18, 1956, in Kansas City, Missouri, to parents Art and Carol. She married Mark Smith in 1977 and together they raised two daughters, Cassia and Ariel. Brenda earned her PhD in Mathematics in 1989 from the University of Missouri. The family moved to Cincinnati in 1993 and then to Hamilton, Ohio, in 1995, where Brenda lived until her death. A math instructor at the Miami University – Hamilton campus, she loved to share her delight in math with her family, students, and colleagues. Brenda also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and gardening. She was known for her beautiful quilts. She is survived by her husband Mark, her daughters Cassia Smith and Ariel (Christopher) Berry, her mother Doris Carol Oakes, her stepmother Ann Bates, and her sister Dana Stockton. She is preceded in death by her father Arthur Bates, her stepfather James Oakes, and her brother Leroy Bates.
