Bio | Steven Joseph Peters, 51, Independence, MO, joined his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sept. 6, 2005. Steve, who was for the last 22 years a double bass player with the Kansas City Symphony, was an unlikely victim of violence. Visitation will be held from 6-8:30 p.m. Sunday, September 11 at the Park Lawn Chapel, Hillcrest Road at 83rd Street. A Service Celebrating Steve's life will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, September 12, at the Kansas City Baptist Temple, 5460 Blue Ridge Cutoff. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Memorial Gardens, Independence. Memorial contributions in Steve's memory may be given to the Kansas City Symphony Endowment Fund, 1020 Central, Suite 300, Kansas City, MO, 64105. Steve was born January 28, 1954 in Kansas City, MO, the son of Joseph and Shirley (King) Peters. He graduated from Van Horn High School in 1972 and later attended Penn Valley Community College. He graduated from the U.M.K.C. Conservatory of Music. Steve was a Double Bass Player for the Kansas City Symphony for 22 years. He also performed in the Orchestra at Starlight Theater for 25 years. He performed in local chamber ensembles and as a freelance jazz bass player. Steve also played the electric bass guitar frequently with the Kansas City Symphony's pops concerts. Survivors include his three sons, U.S. Army Sgt. Scott Allen Peters, stationed in the Sinai Peninsula, William Joseph Peters, Kansas City, and Matthew Steven Peters, Kansas City; his parents, Joe and Shirley Peters, Independence; two sisters, Joanie Peters Welch and her husband, Terry, Independence, and Joyce Peters Hartig and her husband Clayton, Elmira, MO; a niece, Kristen Welch Wickstrom; and nephews, Michael Welch and Davey Messbarger. Not only was Steve a classical musician of singular talent, he was a kind and unassuming person who has left behind many grieving friends, coworkers and family members.
