| Bio | Utica - Shirley Ann "Sam" Osman, née Shirley Ann Malko, 64, of Utica, NY, passed away peacefully in her sleep on April 5th, 2018. Sam was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 but never stopped fighting. She was the eldest of, and is survived by her siblings Vera, John, Michael, Teresa and Melodie, originally of Independence, MO.
Sam earned a Bachelors in Home Economics Education from the University of Missouri and taught home economics in Australia. After returning stateside, Sam married her sweetheart of 38 years, Joseph Osman, her surviving husband. After earning a Master of Blind Rehabilitation Education from Western Michigan University, Sam settled in Utica, NY with Joe and her children, Sean and Anya, also surviving. She lovingly served the central NY community as a Blind/Visually Impaired rehabilitation teacher. Sam was passionate about her career and was successful in improving the independence of each and every one of her students. In addition, she made a positive impact reforming the area schools' approach to educating the visually impaired.
Sam considered herself blessed to be called "Grandma" and "Best Friend" and to be survived by her grandchildren, Jason Michael Nugent, Jr. & Hazelbell Carolina Osman, born only 5 days apart, followed by Jordan Malko Nugent, Teagan Joseph Osman, and Juliana McKenzie Nugent, all of whom she loved and adored. Sam was happiest when surrounded by all of her doting grandchildren.
Sam is also survived by many nieces, nephews, former students, friends and family members. Sam was dearly loved and will be missed by many.
A Celebration of Life will begin on Tuesday, April 10th 2018 at Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral and Cremation Services, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford, NY 13413 with visitation hours from 4-6 p.m. Services will begin at 6 p.m., and be followed by the continuation of the Celebration of Life at Valentino's Banquet Hall 3899 Oneida Street, New Hartford, NY 13413. |
