Gary Jones, 45, of Stone Mountain, Ga., passed away Monday, May 22, 2000. Funeral services were 8 p.m. Thursday, May 25, Decatur, Ga. Graveside services are 10 a.m. Saturday, May 27, at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Floral Hills Chapel.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf, 890 North Indian Creek Drive, Clarkston, GA 30021.
He was born at St. Mary’s Hospital, Kansas City, Mo., in 1953, the son of Dolores and James Martin Jones. He attended Van Horn High School in Kansas City. He received his bachelor of arts at the University of Northern Colorado in 1975, a master of education from Georgia State University in 1980, a specialist in education degree from Georgia State in 1993, and a doctorate from Georgia State in 1995.
Gary began his teaching career 25 years ago at the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf. A well-respected and loved teacher, he was promoted to supervisor, and most recently held the position of superintendent. He will be truly missed by the students and staff, who held a memorial service for him at the school on Tuesday, May 23.
Gary is survived by his mother, Dolores Jones, Lee’s Summit; his brother and family, Michael Jones, Mission Viejo, Calif.; and long-time companion and partner, Richard Yansick, Stone Mountain.
