Michael Mertell, 63 of Blue Mound, KS passed away suddenly on January 1, 2016 after an aggressive episode of his genetic blood disease Hereditary Angioedema (HAE). Visitation will be on Friday, January 8th at Floral Hills Funeral Home from 9-10:00 am with funeral services starting at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in the Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. Mike was born on October 22, 1952 to Wayne Robert (Pete) and Dorothy May (Goold) Mertell. Mike grew up in Independence and Lee’s Summit, graduating from Van Horn High School in 1964. He was employed by the KCMO Police Department as a mechanic early in his career, continuing on as a security officer at World’s of Fun and Arrowhead Stadium. He eventually attended the Police Academy, earned an Associate’s Degree, became a deputy with the Jackson County Sheriff’s department and retired as a sergeant. Following his retirement, he worked in the irrigation business for Ewing Irrigation. Mike completed his working career at Wal-Mart in Ft. Scott, KS as a Customer Service Manager in September of 2015. Mike leaves behind his wife Teri (Marsh/Cundall), son Jimmy Mertell, daughter Kristi Green (Mike), stepdaughters Cammie Colten and Julie Simms, stepsons Philip A. and Noah Cundall, his mother Dorothy Carter-Kincaid, father Pete Mertell, mother-in-law Dixie Marsh, siblings Scott Mertell (Jennifer) and family, Robert Mertell (Amy), Terri Spears (Andy) and family, Jennifer Kempf (Charles) and family, Billie Davis-Moore, Robin Carter (Dorothy) and family, Richard Carter, Lori Carter, Lisa Dorrell (JD), as well as 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and other extended family.
