Mike was born in 1950 to parents Kenneth and Irene Batton of Independence, MO. He graduated from Van Horn High School in 1968, and married Christine “Chee-Chee” Batton in 1972 at St. John the Baptist Church in Kansas City, MO. Mike served six years as a medic in the Air Force Reserves and was a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service for more than 25 years before he retired. He had a great love for music, and while serving in the Air Force he purchased his first guitar and taught himself to play. He passed his love for music, and The Beatles, on to his two sons. When his children were young, Mike would play the guitar and jam with them in their music room. His wife, Chee-Chee, said she would often come home to the whole house vibrating with sound from Mike jamming on his guitar. Mike loved sports and was an avid golfer and loved playing and watching the game. He constantly played golf, usually three times a week, for nearly 50 years. He would leave his golf clubs by the back door so he could practice his swing in the backyard of his home. He was a fantastic bowler and was very proud of his 792 score on a three-game streak. Mike was a lifelong Chiefs fan and was so happy to have seen the Chiefs win the 2019 Superbowl while watching with his family. You could say Mike was a “Pepper” because he would usually have a soda from the Dr. in one hand and a chocolate chip cookie in the other, and he loved eating pizza every Saturday night for 45 years. He loved his grandchildren fiercely and was overjoyed to be a papa. He was head over heels in love with his grandson Frankie and granddaughter Theo. Mike is survived by his wife Chee-Chee Batton; two sons, Michael Ryan Batton (Veronica) and John Paul Batton (Bree); his two grandchildren Francis Michael, and Theodora Ruth Batton; brother-in-law, Eddie J. McHardie (Kim); nephew and nieces, Eddie, Carmella, and Stephanie McHardie; great-nephew and great-nieces, Skylar, Davin, Cara, and Chloe McHardie; and goddaughters, Carmella McHardie and Lisa Armato. Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Charles; his sister, Edith; and his parents. Due to COVID-19, the family has planned a private service. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date in the future. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children’s Heart Foundation.
