Tom Oliver, 59, of Independence, Mo., passed away Saturday November 7, 2009. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary, 10017 E. 36th Terrace, Independence. Cremation is planned, with the ashes to be scattered at a later date. Tom graduated from Van Horn High School and the University of Missouri at Kansas City. He was a social worker with Missouri's Division of Family Services for 30 years, retiring in 2003. A devoted father and grandfather, Tom is survived by his daughter, Megan, his son, Thomas and his grandson, Tommy, all of Independence. He was preceded in death by wife, Connie. In addition to his children and grandson, survivors include his mother, Mary Cecelia Oliver of Independence, and a brother, Bill Oliver of Lexington, Va. As a young man, Tom was an accomplished golfer and tennis player. He loved sports cars, restoring and driving them were lifetime hobbies. He was known by all for his keen sense of humor and by his soft heart.
