I now volunteer for VietNam Veterans of America. obit Retired Master Sergeant Army Master Sergeant Charles Shumate, 55, of Liberty, MO, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005. Funeral service will be Noon, Monday, March 28, at St. James Catholic Church, Liberty. Burial in Resurrection Cemetery. Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to Noon Monday at the church. The family suggests memorial contributions in Charles' name to the St. James Prayer Garden. Charles was born March 26, 1949, in Kansas City, MO. He served in the United States Army for 20 years, retiring in 1992. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. After retirement, Master Sergeant Shumate was active as a volunteer with the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 317. He served as an advocate for veterans who experienced Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife, Amy McCoy Shumate; son, A.J. Shumate; grandson, Anthony Shumate; two half sisters, Nancy Casburn and Carolyn Pangel; as well as his Vietnam Brothers.
