Bio | Mary Scrogin Farmer
August 22, 1949 - February 28, 2024
Bedford, Texas - Mary Scrogin Farmer, 74, of Bedford, Texas passed away peacefully on February 28, 2024.
Mary was born August 22, 1949, to Winston Joel and Jane Ware Scrogin of Independence, Missouri. She was raised in Independence, Missouri and graduated from Van Horn High School in 1967. Following high school, Mary attended Southwest Missouri State College (Missouri State University) and graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts in English. Mary taught English at the Junior College level before permanently moving to Texas. In 1975, Mary was conferred a master's degree from North Texas State University.
From 1976 until 2014, Mary served as a flight attendant for American Airlines. Working for American Airlines allowed Mary to pursue her passion of traveling the world and exploring other countries, cultures and cuisines. During her tenue at American, Mary developed lifelong and meaningful relationships with her fellow flight crew members, many of whom became Mary's family and surrounded her with love, joy, humor, and comfort all the days of her life.
Mary's life, however, was not defined by her education or occupation, her life was defined by the relationships she forged. Mary was a loyal and devoted friend. While beautiful by any standard, Mary's inner-beauty and gentle soul are what naturally drew people to her. She was beloved by all who interacted with her and had a gift of making each person she encountered feel special. Mary's parents instilled and encouraged Mary's faith, and she lived that faith by giving of herself to others. She was interested in supporting causes that advocated for the underprivileged and underrepresented. She mentored students through Kids Hope USA, donated faithfully to Running Strong for American Indian Youth and participated in marches and protests seeking to draw attention to political and social injustice. Another byproduct of her upbringing was a great love for books and a passion for the arts. Mary was a voracious reader, often sharing book suggestions or passing along a dog-eared copy, and she was a frequent visitor to local fine arts performances and museum exhibits.
Mary's deepest love was reserved for her four-legged family. Mary never met a dog or horse she did not love (and that did not love her back) and her compassion for animals led her to rescue pets including her beloved Sailor, Lobo, Sadie, and Abby.
Mary was treasured by her family, especially her nieces and nephews to whom she was their dear Aunt Mary. Aunt Mary adored her nieces and nephews and was a constant presence in their lives. Her humor and zest for life were refreshing and endearing and she could brighten any family occasion. Later in life, she especially enjoyed spending time playing games and engaging in silliness with her cherished great nephews and nieces: Mary Caroline, Michael, Henry, Lilly, Jane, and Charlotte. Aunt Mary was loved and will be sorely missed.
Mary is survived by her sister Georgia Beth Scrogin (George) Kapke of Independence, Missouri, Sister-in-law Sue Ellen Williams Scrogin of Edgartown, Massachusetts, Niece Rachel Ware Kapke (Chris) Dold of Kansas City, Missouri, Niece Sarah Elizabeth (Doug Pravda) Scrogin of New York, New York, Nephew Joel Williams Scrogin of Edgartown, Massachusetts, and Nephew George E. "Ted" (Jamie) Kapke Jr. of Prairie Village, Kansas.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents Winston Joel (Bill) Scrogin, Jane Ware Scrogin, and her brother Reverend C. Michael Scrogin.
A celebration of Mary's life will take place on May 4, 2024, in Bedford, Texas, details will be shared with friends and family.
