Bio | Gary Lynn Howland, 60 of Lee's Summit, MO, passed away on Thursday June 25, 2009. Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday June 30 at St. John Francis Regis Catholic Church, 8941 James A. Reed Road. The visitation will be 6-8:00 p.m. Monday June 29 at the church with a rosary before at 5:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Delta Chi Fraternity Scholarship Endowment through the University of Central Missouri Foundation. Mr. Howland was born July 22, 1948 in Carrolton, MO. Gary grew up in Independence, MO, and graduated from Van Horn High School in 1966. He received a BS in Education from CMSU in 1970 and went on to receive his Masters degree in Elementary School Administration and Supervision in 1978. He spent 37 years working in education both as a teacher and elementary school principal. In 1974 he married the love of his life, Maxine Bennett and they shared 34 years together before her death just two months ago. They had a companionship like no other, enjoyed seeing new places together, spending time with their two children and three grandchildren as well as their dear friends, Sam and Cathy King. Gary was a founding father of the Delta Chi Fraternity at CMSU and remained very active as an alumni advisor. Recently he was honored with the 2009 Alumnus of the Year award of which he was very proud. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He was like no other. He was preceded in death by his wife Maxine, parents Glendon and Hellen Howland, sister Glenda Sue. He is survived by his son Andrew Howland, daughter Whitney Zeiler (Chris), brother Fred Howland (Dena), sister Dixie Givan (Ken), and grandchildren Brady, Addison and Cole.
