Bio     Shirley Rae Swinney, 77, a resident of Blue Springs, MO passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, October 25, 2022 at Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence, MO. She was born March 12, 1945 to Von and Mayme (Gettys) Carriker in Independence, MO. Shirley was a 1963 graduate of Van Horn High School in Independence, MO. She was united in marriage to Steve Swinney on September 20, 1963 in Independence, MO. Shirley started her working career in data processing for Vendo and Havens Steel. She later received her real estate license and became a corporate travel agent for Burns & McDonnell, eventually managing and retiring from Winship Travel Inc. Shirley and Steve were members of the Harley Owners Group (HOG) in Blue Springs and the Cessna 120/140 Association. Motorcycle trips around the United States and Canada were a highlight. She also enjoyed the 140 flying trips especially the annual flying conventions held in different cities. Shirley was fond of her poodles, making ceramics, traveling, shopping, and baking. Above all, Shirley cherished being a grandma, lovingly known as “Granny”. Shirley is survived by her husband, Steve Swinney, of Blue Springs, MO; son, Steve Swinney II and wife Terri of Hudson, WI; grandchildren, Adam Swinney and wife Kimberly, and Aaron Swinney. Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Von and Mayme Carriker, and her sister, Beverly Masick. Her family will receive family and friends from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Friday, November 25, 2022 at Meyers Funeral Chapel, 1600 W. Main St, Blue Springs, MO. A short dedication of Shirley’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Her family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Wayside Waifs Donate – Wayside Waifs Memories of Shirley and words of comfort for her family may be shared at meyersfuneralchapel.com.
