Bio     We are deeply saddened to announce Barbara Slankard of Independence, Mo., passed away on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, at the age of 77. Born to Fred and Betty Smith on December 22, 1944. Barbara was a beautiful and kind soul who impacted many people throughout her life. She graduated from Van Horn High School and soon after began a career that she dearly loved working as a secretary for lawfirms such as: Watson, Ess; Marshall & Enggas; Morris Larson & Armstrong Teasedale for over 35 years. Barbara found peace in her faith in God and was an active member of Abundant Life Church. Her passion was reading and you could always find her curled up with a good book. She loved her family and friends with her whole heart and filled their lives and her home with a warmth and kindness that cannot be forgotten. We will miss her greatly but rejoice in knowing that her love, wisdom and compassion will live on within us all. Barbara was preceded in death by her loving husband Jack Slankard of 42 years. She is survived by her children Shelly Frederico and Kevin Slankard, grandchildren Nikki Frederico, Tony Ramirez, and Lyric Bell, great-grandchildren Elliana and Myla Ramirez, as well as her brother Jim Smith and his wife Liz and their beautiful family. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the George Owens Nature Park Lodge located at 1601 S. Speck Road, Independence, MO 64057, where we can honor Barbara and show our gratitude for having her in our lives. Please feel free to bring pictures of Barbara and stories of times spent together.

5/1/2024 / 1:00:00 PM - Jerry R. Williams, nationally recognized sculptor, artist and Professor Emeritus, University of Oregon will make a major gift to Van Horn High School. Jerry is a VH Alumni (1960) and will be gifting a Falcon sculpture he created to VH at this time. All school alumni are welcome to attend.
