Bio | Selma Oztemir was Van Horn's first Field Service Student.
Selma Oztemir Soylemez passed away on July 12 in Istanbul, Turkey from coronavirus complications. Selma (1962-1963) was the first AFS student at Van Horn High School. She traveled from her home in Gaziantep to Istanbul
where she joined a ship load of students to New York and then by bus to the Kansas City Area...
a brave adventure for a young teen girl in those days. She was a wonderful representative of her country and the whole student body loved her. The class of 1963 especially appreciated her friendly ways and willingness to participate in activities. Her host sister, Kathy McLaughlin Vest has kept in touch all these years and the families are really close. We are all sad about the loss of our lovely Selma. Sympathy cards can be sent to Kathy Vest who will forward them on to Selma's family. |
