James Alfred "Al" Mawhiney, 60, of Blue Springs, MO, passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his family and a multitude of friends. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2004, at Speaks Suburban Chapel; burial will be in Mt. Washington Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday evening at the chapel. Donations may be made to The Salvation Army Crossroads Shelter. Al was born May 14, 1944, in Kansas City, MO, to James E. and Juanita (Aston) Mawhiney. He grew up in the Independence area, graduating from Van Horn High School in 1962. He currently worked for The Salvation Army as a staff member at the Crossroads Shelter, where he touched many lives with his kindness and generosity. He was married to Shirley Garrett on February 1, 1964; she survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Sheri Mawhiney and Sondra Mawhiney, both of Independence, MO; a granddaughter, Jessica Mawhiney of Independence; and several nieces and nephews.
