Ellen graduated from Van Horn High School before earning her bachelor's degree from Central Missouri State University (now known as the University of Central Missouri). She dedicated much of her career as a physical education teacher in the Blue Springs School District. It was there that she met her husband, Leonard Draves, an art teacher who initially did not catch her eye. However, as fate would have it, their bond deepened, leading to a beautiful life together filled with love and partnership. An avid history buff, Ellen passionately delved into family genealogy and was well-versed in the history of her church: The Church of Christ With The Elijah Message, The Assured Way of The Lord. She was the go-to source for anyone seeking historical information in her community, reflecting her generosity and commitment to knowledge. Additionally, she enjoyed watching sports, often supporting her daughter's soccer teams earlier in their lives by serving as a scheduler for many years. Ellen was known for her ornery disposition and wildly generous heart, traits that those around her adored.
Ellen's passing was preceded by her parents, Ulysses and Edith Hammond, and her beloved husband, Leonard Hiram Jewel Draves. Her legacy of love lives on through her daughters, Ruby Draves and Joy Draves Dreher (Branden); her grandchildren, Gavin Hixson, Aubry Horton, and Zane Draves Dreher Burris; and her sister, Janet Talbert.
