Preceded in death by his beloved parents Raymond and Mary Davolt, numerous aunts and uncles, and infant son, Tollison. The shining legacy he leaves is his unfailing love and devotion to his family and his community. He is survived by his beautiful wife of 44 years, Shelly (Clark) Davolt, and his four children, to which he was a loving father, Renee (Steve) White, Elyse (Richard) Sunderman, Barry (Rebecca) Davolt, and Skarlett (Victor) Parra. He is also survived by his 11 grandchildren to which he was a doting grandpa (poppi, pop pop). James is also survived by his brother Max (Joyce) Davolt and sister Leta (Glen) Porter, as well as several nieces and nephews. Those family and friends who survived him will always remember his joy, his love, and his ability to make those around him feel special. James held his faith close to his heart, loved God, loved his country, and was a good and faithful servant to Jesus. He was an avid hunter, a voracious reader, and always an educator. His love of community was demonstrated in numerous ways. He served on the board of directors of the City Union Mission, where he also delivered messages at chapel services and helped out at the family center. He coached Independence Pop Warner football and IYAA basketball. He also served as president of the IYAA and umpired for Queen City Baseball for many years. James loved all things Kansas City and Independence, MO, and would gladly serve as a tour guide anytime someone would visit. He was a big Kansas City sports fan; he loved the Chiefs, but he had a special love for Royals baseball. James was born at home in Aldrich, MO, on May 27, 1944, close to where the family farm now stands. He served his country proudly from 1967 to 1973 during the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Army, spending a portion of that time in Germany where he was a member of the Military Police. During his time in the service, James rose to the rank of Sergeant and was awarded two medals for marksmanship. He received both a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Central Missouri State University (University of Central Missouri). He was an educator who taught history, speech, and drama before serving as principal. Following his time in education, he pursued a career in sales and entrepreneurship. He was immensely proud of the fact that he and his wife founded and owned their own successful small business. In retirement, James continued to be active, going to his grandchildren’s games and activities, learning new recipes to cook, and doing whatever he could do to be of service to others. Memorial service (to include military funeral honors) will be held on Friday, 2/18/22 @ 2:00 PM Calvary Baptist Church 900 NW 22nd St Blue Springs, MO 64015 In lieu of flowers please send donations to the City Union Mission. “My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of James Edward Davolt please visit our Sympathy Store.
