Following his release from the Army, Charles served as comptroller for a local radio station for a year before going into business for himself with a small grocery store. Eight years later, he went to work for Civil Service as a financial counselor for Army Community Service. Charles retired April 2001 to enjoy his 3 grandchildren, 3 time shares, Kansas Speedway Founders Pass seats, playing on the computer, gardening, playing his music, and napping on the couch.

He was minister of music at the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, Missouri for over 20 years, still using that beautiful tenor voice. Charles loved his music, favoring stringed instruments. His collection included 4 guitars, dulcimer, psaltery, balalaika and an autoharp.

In the early hours of Nov 22, 2002, Charles passed away, very suddenly, from a possible abdominal aneurysm. He is buried in Waynesville where he and his family had spent the last 26 years of his life.
